Ferroalloy market notes: what to watch in Q4 2026

Energy costs, silicon metal availability and freight rates are the three variables we are watching for the next quarter. A short, practical brief.

This is a buying brief, not a price forecast. It covers the variables that have historically moved ferroalloy offers fastest — energy, raw material availability and freight — and what they mean for Q4 purchasing.

Silicon: the energy story continues

Silicon metal and ferrosilicon are electricity-intensive. When smelting regions face power curtailment or seasonal tariff changes, offers tighten within weeks. Buyers running monthly contracts should watch production cuts in the main silicon clusters rather than daily spot quotes.

For ferrosilicon specifically, the spread between 72 and 75 tends to widen when demand for low-aluminium steel grades is strong.

Manganese and chrome: ore and alloy move together

Manganese alloy costs track ore prices and furnace utilisation. Chrome follows a similar pattern, with the additional variable of stainless steel demand. When ore prices rise, alloy producers usually try to pass the increase through before cutting output.

For long-term buyers, the practical move is to lock the alloy grade and the delivery window, and leave the price linked to a published index rather than a fixed number.

Freight: the quiet variable

Container availability and rates can change a landed cost more than a 2% alloy price move. Q4 typically brings pre-holiday congestion and blank sailings. If your production schedule is fixed, book the sailing date before the price negotiation closes.

What to watch next quarter

  • Power curtailment notices in silicon-producing regions.
  • Ore price moves for manganese and chrome.
  • Container availability on your main trade lane.
  • Steel mill utilisation in your destination market.
